Abstract

This collection documents 19 of the 21 Alta California missions founded by Spanish Franciscans, as the missions appeared between 1952 to 1954 at the time that they were sketched and painted by the artist. The sketches were produced and painted by Father James (Jim) Menard, S.J. between 1952 to 1954 while attending Alma College. The paintings hung in the library until Alma College relocated to Berkeley and became the Jesuit School of Theology.

The Mrs. Fremont Older Photograph Collection, 1854-1965, consists of photographs collected by author and historian Cora Miranda Baggerly Older (commonly referred to as Mrs. Fremont Older). The bulk of the collection consists of photographs of San Francisco, as well as various other sites in California, the CA missions and portraits of noted Californians. Scope and Content of the Collection The Santa Clara University Artifact Collection consists of 573 items spanning a broad range of formats. Each of the series in the collection attests to an important aspect of the university’s history and identity.
