Cross made from wood of Mission Santa Clara cross of 1777, undated
Scope and Content
This series consists of objects related to Mission Santa Clara. Founded in 1777 by the Franciscan order, Mission Santa Clara was the 8th mission established in California. It is named after St. Clare of Assisi, who was a follower of St. Francis of Assisi and the founder of the order of the Poor Clares. Mission Santa Clara is the only mission located on a university campus.
The bulk of the items in this series consist of collectible objects made in the late 20th-early 21st century, which feature a likeness of the mission church. These include Christmas tree ornaments, a beer stein, a coaster set, drinking glasses, and a collector’s plate. The series also contains a limited number of objects that originated at Mission Santa Clara, such as an iron key reputedly used for the third mission church.
