Relic of Mother Mary Rose (includes note and envelope),, 1968
Scope and Content
This series documents the Catholic heritage of Santa Clara University through various artifacts and ephemera. Santa Clara University has maintained a strong Catholic Jesuit identity ever since its founding by the Jesuit order in 1851. Many of the items in this series demonstrate a devotion to saints associated with the Jesuit order, such as St. Ignatius Loyola and St. Francis Xavier.
This series contains 106 items. The bulk of the materials in this series are personal devotional items such as medals, rosaries, crucifixes and scapulars. The series also includes devotional ephemera such as prayer cards.
The series includes relics of various saints, which were likely collected by Jesuits associated with the university while on pilgrimages in Europe.
Several examples of liturgical items can be found in this series. Among these are a small ciborium and an oil stock, which were likely used by priests who traveled to locations outside the church to perform various religious rites.
Included in this series are several items that formed the “St. Clare Collection.” Among these are two medallions, a small statue and a ceramic plate featuring the likeness of St. Clare.
