Scope and Content of the Collection

This collection contains sleep and dreaming study participant surveys, recordings, dream recall notes, sleep and lifestyle assessments, and study protocols, methodological records, CD recordings of sleep data, and documents. It is arranged into two series. The first series documents a home-based, longitudinal dream recall study (N = 147 Participants). This data set includes narrative reports and participants' ratings of the subjective qualities of their reported dreams. Files are arranged by participant code number.

The second series documents a large-scale sleep/wake study (N = 174 Participants) which entailed the systematic sampling of dreaming and waking experiences. For each experience sample, the participant provided a narrative report and then used two psychometrically validated measures (the SERS and the MACE) to assess, respectively, the subjective qualities and metacognitive features of their reported experience. For a subset of participants (N = 28), experience samples were obtained in the sleep lab on campus and thus information about sleep psychophysiology and sleep stages was collected in addition to the narrative reports and phenomenological measures. Files are arranged by subject and participant code number.

Biographical History

The Tracey L. Kahan sleep and dream research collection consists of materials generated during two dreaming studies conducted by Dr. Kahan during her faculty tenure in the Psychology Department at Santa Clara University. The first study was a home-based, longitudinal dream recall study (N = 147 Participants). This data set includes narrative reports and participants' ratings of the subjective qualities of their reported dreams. The second study was a large-scale sleep/wake study (N = 174 Participants) which entailed the systematic sampling of dreaming and waking experiences. For each experience sample, the participant provided a narrative report and then used two psychometrically validated measures (the SERS and the MACE) to assess, respectively, the subjective qualities and metacognitive features of their reported experience. Organizational History

Santa Clara University was founded in 1851 by the Society of Jesus as Santa Clara College and is California’s oldest operating institution of higher learning. It was established on the grounds of Mission Santa Clara de Asìs, the eighth of the original 21 California missions. The college originally operated as a preparatory school and did not offer courses of collegiate rank until 1853. The institution became known as the University of Santa Clara in 1912, when the schools of engineering and law were added. For 110 years, Santa Clara University was an all-male school. In 1961, women were accepted as undergraduates and Santa Clara University became the first coeducational Catholic university in California. The number of students and faculty tripled over the next decade and the university began the largest building program in school history with eight residence halls, a student union, and an athletic stadium. In the early 1970s, the Board of Trustees voted to limit the size of the undergraduate population, an action that was intended to preserve the character and ensure the quality of the university for generations to come. In 1985, the university adopted Santa Clara University as its official name. Arrangement

Materials are arranged by study and then by participant number into the following series:

Series I: Longitudinal Dream Research Study Series II: Sleep-Wake Study

Physical Location

Processing Information

Processing of the Tracey L. Kahan sleep and dream research papers was completed in May 2024.

Folder Titles

The folder titles assigned in this finding aid were taken directly from the original folders. A "/" in the folder title indicates that the information that follows is from a different part of the folder than the preceding information.

For Series I, the title indicates the number that that participant was assigned in the study for anonymity.

For Series II, the first number indicates the file order as assigned by the donor, and the following numbers indicate the portion of the study the file was created for and the participants' assigned number, possibly preceded by the letters "DF". Letter-number combinations indicate the assigned code for that participant (e.g.; DN89).
