Correspondence - Baker, Joseph John, 1942 to 1950
Scope and Content of the Collection
Father Gianera’s administration began within months following the end of World War II; the end of the war brought with it a dramatic increase in student enrollment at Santa Clara. The student body was now made up of mostly veterans, some married with families. Campus housing was in short supply as well as classroom and laboratories. The files include data for a World War II memorial booklet featuring biographical information about alumni killed in the war, the DeSaisset estate and construction of the gallery, the celebration of the Centennial in 1951, fund raising, the dedication of the monument honoring John J. Montgomery on campus, the release of the movie “Gallant Journey”, the transfer of the Montgomery glider to the Smithsonian Institution, the Richard M. Hermes Research projects, the Passion Play, and the ROTC, as well correspondence on buildings, policies and procedures, committees, reports, minutes, staff memos, meeting minutes, and brochures.
