Scope and Content of the Collection
Father Walsh became the “War President” at Santa Clara: he was given the task of trying to accommodate Santa Clara to the loss of more than 1/5th of its normal enrollment. During his administration an accelerated program of study was created in order to allow students to graduate in three years and intercollegiate athletic competition was cancelled. An Army Specialized Training Program was begun in 1943, to provide basic and advanced engineering classes, however Santa Clara faced a fiscal crisis. Father Walsh launched the Emergency Fund Appeal in order to raise over $100,000 to sustain the campus until the end of the war, and in 1945, he sold the Villa Maria, the college's winery and vineyard. The files include an accreditation report (1941), and correspondence re campus events, buildings, and botanist Rev. George A. Schoener. Also included are files related to war time activities, military service and training, and the launching of the Santa Clara Victory Ship.
